Kõdõ, one of the three classical Japanese arts as tea ceremony, is a gathering of appreciating incense and sharing emotions and imaginations with the people living in different time and space. A Japanese olfactory artist Maki Ueda holds her original and artistic Kõdõ ceremony.

I happen to curate a media art exhibition, in the context of the IFFR x V2_. How come that? This thing was simply interesting!
Enjoying 3D in your hand palm is something very special, and such fascination cannot be triggered by photographs: you just have to come and see it. So as the olfactory works. This exhibition is still on the global tour (organized by V2) so I hope you get a chance to see it.

みなさんちょっと意外に思われるかもしれませんが、この私が、あるメディア・アートの展覧会をキュレーションしました。しかもロッテルダム国際映画祭という大きな舞台で。素直に「面白い！」と思ったものに食らいついたら、そんなことになってました。そういえばむかしはもっとメディア・アートっぽいことをしていたので、昔の仲間とふたたび一緒に仕事して、プチ同窓会みたいでしたね。ふだんは作家という立場ですが、キュレータという、またちょっと違う立場に立ち、得たものも多かったです。
Palm Top Theater を直訳すると「手のひらの中の劇場」。iPhoneやiPadなどのモバイル機器で、３D映像を楽しむ、という趣旨の展覧会です。裸眼で3Dを見る感覚は、匂い同様、写真に映せない。だからこそ感動があります。大好評で、現在世界ツアー中ですので、機会があればぜひ足を運んでください。

"OLFACTOSCAPE" exhibited in Lucena, Spain at the Sensxperiment festival (Nov. 2011)

Olfactoscape is a 3m diameter space created with a curtain. The walls are "painted" with smells.OLFACTOSCAPE is a word that I made up, consisting of OLFACTO (= olfactory) and SCAPE (= scenery). Let's observe an olfactory landscape with our nose, like a dog. Close your eyes, walk and sniff.Some scents come closer to you, while others fade away. Is there any scent that attracts you, or that makes you want to approach? This is a research project of searching for the boundaries and possibilities of our sense of smell.
Japanese people have a unique sense for the scents in nature. They appreciate the scents of the season as if viewing the landscape. They feel tipsy for the sweet scents under the cherry blossoms in the early spring night, and they feel the autumn for the scents of osmanthus. OLFACTOSCAPE is meant for experiencing such olfactory attitude. The selection of the scents illustrates this Japanese sensitivity to nature.
This work was initially developed with the support of INFRAMINCE, Inc (www.inframince.jp) and PANTALOON (www.pantaloon.jp).

OLFACTOSCAPE（オルファクトスケープ）は、「OLFACTO = 嗅覚の」と「SCAPE = シーン・風景」を組み合わせた造語。
夜桜の仄かに甘い香りの下で酔い、金木犀の香りに秋を感じる。このように、匂いをまるで風景を眺めるかのように嗅ぎ、賞賛する、そんな類いまれな感性を、わたしたち日本人は持っている。
では、そんな匂いの風景を鼻で見てみよう。直径３mの、円筒形のこの空間の中に立ち、目を閉じ、犬のように鼻で匂いをサーチしてみよう。近づく匂いもあれば、遠ざかる匂いもあるだろう。それらが重なり合わさってまた別な匂いになるかもしれない。ついつい引き寄せられてしまうような、魅惑的な匂いはあるだろうか。これは、私たちの嗅覚の限界と可能性を探るための、リサーチ・プロジェクトでもある。

Exceptionally I've developed an aroma for this cosmetic product, simply because their concept was unique: if skin is to be a device of the haptic sense, why not skin care product to be a medium?

From the product note:
An olfactory artist Maki Ueda developed for the fragrance of [tilde_] with the image of "skin tone". It is not too sweet, somewhat dear, and transparent.
In the old Japanese language, there was no clear division in expressions for the color and the smell. For example the word "niou (fragrant)" meant not only smelling nice, but also meant that the color of "beni" looks vibrant. (The color is in between red, pink and orange). There is a perfect example in the oldest poem book "Manyoshu" edited more than 1000 years ago. The poem is about the beauty of a woman who is standing under a peach tree. The pink color of the blossoms is reflected on the chin of the woman. He says that the skin color of her chin is "niou (fragrant)".
Such unique Japanese sensitivity, somewhat synesthetic, became the starting point for the "skin tone scent".

「朝と夜、昨日の出来事、明日の予定、今いる場所や今の気分。自身をとりまく環境や状況は、日々刻々と変化します。そんな環境や状況にさらされている身体と外界の境界である“肌”。 “肌”は触覚というひとつの感覚器官として、時には視覚や聴覚以上に、ものごとの微差を感じています。」
「肌」「触覚」を感覚器官と認識し、ある種の「媒体（メディウム）」として開発された基礎化粧品 "tilide_"。この希有なコンセプトの化粧品の香りをクリエーションしました。
香りのインスピレーションとしたのは、万葉集の大伴家持の歌です。
“春の苑紅にほふ桃の花下照る道に出で立つ少女（をとめ）” [意味：春の苑は桃の花で紅に輝いている。その下に立つ少女も輝いて見える。]
当時の日本人の共感覚にアプローチし、「紅色を肌にのせる」「輝きを肌にのせる」そんなイメージの香りを現しました。

In the year 2011 I was often on retreat in Japan to recover my sense of smell damaged by allergy (hay fever that is site-specific to European climate). Since then I'm based in Japan, flying occasionaly to Holland. That helped my condition recovering. I also have quite a few projects coming up in Singapore - see you somewehre, sometime!

2011年を総括すると、ちょっと休業気味の、鋭気を養う年でした。長年患っている土地性のアレルギー（ヨーロッパでのみ発症する牧草花粉症）によって、鼻も効かなくなってしまったため、夏はゆっくりと石垣島で療養し、その後は基本的に日本にいます。おかげさまで嗅覚は戻りました！　今後も基本は日本を拠点に、ときどきオランダ、シンガポールなど、ちょっとノマド的な生活になる予定ですが、これまで距離が遮っていた日本での展示やプロジェクトなども可能になりました。気軽にお声をかけてください。
匂いだけでなく、食やフレーバーに関するプロジェクトが世界のいたるところで多数進行しています。特にシンガポールにおいては、様々なプロジェクトが展開していく予定です。ご縁もあり、シンガポール法人も立ち上げ、拠点ができました。シンガポールは今や、アジアのNY。今後も更に、国、人種、文化、言葉、既成概念などの枠を超え、共感できるものを作り続けていきたいと思います。

One of my work was selected for the Rotterdam's Art Calendar 2012. They chose 365 diverse works from artists, designers, and architects based in Rotterdam. Will be published on the 11th of Nov!

Uitnodiging lancering Grote Rotterdamse Kunstkalender 2012

Op 11-11-11 is het zo ver: de Grote Rotterdamse Kunstkalender 2012 wordt gepresenteerd, gelanceerd en gevierd in LP2. U bent van harte welkom om bij dit moment aanwezig te zijn vanaf 17.00 uur.

De Grote Rotterdamse Kunstkalender bevat 366 (schrikkeljaar!) werken van aanstormende en gevestigde Rotterdamse kunstenaars, fotografen, architecten, illustratoren en (mode)vormgevers. Daarmee laat de kalender de diversiteit en kracht zien van het kunstenveld in Rotterdam!

Tijdens deze lancering willen we met u allen hoopvol vooruitblikken op 2012. Wat gaan we doen in 2012? Het zijn hele spannende zo niet barre tijden voor de kunsten. We willen daarom deze vrijdagmiddag/avond aangrijpen om het aangename en het nuttige te combineren middels een hele grote idee-uitwisseling. Dit alles geflankeerd met een eenvoudige doch voedzame maaltijd en drank voor iedereen. Natuurlijk geven ook diverse types acte de présence, maar daarover later meer!

Wij hopen dat tout Rotterdam zijn of haar gezicht zal laten zien en van zich zal laten horen. Ook gaan wij er vanuit dat al de creatoren van deze kalender hun werk even laten rusten om samen te proosten op de schoonheid van Rotterdam en de Kunsten. Voor al die andere minder creatieven de kans om de mensen achter de werken in de kalender live te aanschouwen.

Het belooft deze 11-11-11 feestelijk te worden: hoera de Grote Rotterdamse Kunstkalender is dan een feit!

Kom langs en neem uw vrienden en/of familie mee zodat het echt gezellig wordt. Vanzelfsprekend is de kalender ook te koop op deze avond (27,50 euro).

It was nicely opened on the 21st of October, 2011. I arrived in the middle of opening. I've heard that the person who made an opening speech, a respected artist who resides locally, was very interested in this work, because he himself has made paintings with orange smell. All the other works were nice and I knew almost all the artists too. The party became a nice reunion :-)

After ten years of activity Sensxperiment International Creation Meeting will be organized in a triennial basis, so most activities of the current eleventh edition will take place in October and November 2011, mainly in Lucena and Cordoba, Spain.

The topic chosen for this edition is ‘Sensory Immersion’.

We do not have to talk only about the history of arts and entertainment, this phenomenon has always been integrated in the quotidian experience and it appears also in most popular rituals, from the ancient indigenous cultures to all kinds of Western celebrations, in a rave or a metal performance.

Today there are a lot of artistic and entertainment pieces that promote themselves using extensively the term ‘immersion’. In many cases this term underlines their multisensoriality, hyper-reality or a somewhat intimate and subjective character, in other occasions it is maybe just a way to stress their magnificent technologies.

Anyway, let´s talk about what it is interesting for us and what we will deal with in this project. Our aim is to examine this elusive concept departing from a series of artistic works based mostly in the use of audiovisual media and with a special emphasis in topics related to the exploration of the surrounding, intimate and physical qualities of sound. The aim is to show recent works, but also relevant pieces from the past, all of them considered interesting mostly because (but not exclusively) of their value as perceptive experiences. We also would like to contextualize these kinds of work, examining them from a critical point of view. Several interweaved lines of investigation will be drawn, dealing with topics such as expanded and live cinema, the relationships between sound and space, the soundwalk, deep listening or the soundscape. In short, we are more interested in perception and the sensory than in the spectacular or the strictly technological issues behind many works catalogued as immersive.

The basic structure of this project ia a dynamic investigation process started in 2009 led by some of the editors of mediateletipos.net and it take form in a series of regular online publications, as an accompaniment for the physical events that will take place in this year (and some that taken place in the last year 2010). All the posts related to this project are published within the usual flow of the site, but they are grouped also in a special section.

Their project "skin and environment / touch: design from feeling" proposes the world be perceived through touching. The project started with the thought that new ways of thinking and productive lifestyle can be acquired by spending everyday life with different perspectives. Directed by PANTALOON, artist Maki Ueda blended new perfume for the skincare product line "t i l d e _". They give people the fragments of thoughts perceived through "touching".

Het 32e boekje in de reeks: zomer 2011
(er was ooit een 0-nummer. Vandaar dat dit nummer 31 toch het 32e boekje is. Het blijft lastig!). Een aantal van deze uitgaven zijn niet meer los te koop, maar de hele serie van 32 boekjes is nog te koop in het Rotterdammertje.

Het zomernummer wordt rond 15 juni verzonden naar de abonnees. Ach... u bent nog steeds geen abonnee...nou, dat kan hier geregeld worden.

Based on a proposal to donate the proceeds to the Japan eartquake victims through 'Architecture for Humanity' an aid programme lead by designers. My friend, whom I really respect as an olfactory artist, Peter de Coupre, writes about an article of ArtNews on olfactory art. 2011 seems to be the new year of olfactory art.

Sweat, gunpowder, grass, jasmine, pine, pollution, and patchouli are some of the odors wafting around galleries, museums, and studios these days as artists incorporate scent into the esthetic experience... In the March issue of ARTnews magazine Barbara Pollack gives an overview of a lot of known contemporary artists in the field of olfactory art.

I find it personally a very interesting article because it shows that there is a lot to say about smell in art and the strenght of it. I guess from every artist that is mentioned, - and it are a lot, you could write a totally new article about olfactory art and especially their way of exploring it.

I recommend it to read.

Like you might have noticed some of them are member of this website. I hope a lot more will follow so this online olfactory community has potentional to increase.

There are of course a lot more olfactory artists that could have been mentioned, but it's good that the artworld starts to write more about smell as part of art so there'll be more attention to it. It would be nice that a forum like this website would be a kind of collection of artists that show there works with scents. I guess when the artworld has a wider overview of which artist is doing what with scent, they might be even more interested to see olfactory art as a real art and I'm not talking only about visual art in combination with smell but also just the gold liquid.

Or like Chandler Burr says in the article: “What interests me is helping people understand that these are actually works of art, that they are beautiful and esthetically important and meet all the criteria for art, equal in terms to painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and film.”

I guess a good way to show to a wider public that a fragrance can be a piece of art is to show it equal to visual art with a respect isolation to the environment. Actually for me it's clear that a scent can be an artwork. It's all about memory, feeling and reaction... a little molecule can throw you back in time. So actually it can have and often has more power than the visual aspect of an artwork. You can close your eyes but can't close your nose, - except when you are trained for it. The difference between the two is that the 'smell' works more on instinct and subjectivity based on the memory of a persons mind. The 'visual' is actually a way people have learned to look to things. Although they think that we interpret it on a subjective way, we have learned how to see and look to things. There are symbols, signs, social aspects that people recognize and that they can translate by knowledge. The smell is more based on a subjective way of knowing than the viewer does. Most of the time we remember something by smell just because it was present at a certain time, so we learned unconscious the relation between a scent and a certain moment, a happening and all stuff that was present at that moment. The beauty of a smell is that you can make your own mental view based on your memory feelings and on the chemical process in the body that takes place. Already for this chemical reaction of your body on a smell, - thinking about aromatherapy (not that i personally see aromatherapy as an art, because than every therapist should be called artist, - what's in a name?), I think scent has the same rights to be an artwork. It's more complex to understand and there's still a lot to tell about.

On the 20th of March, 2011, there were 80 people visiting... totally packed at STEIM Amsterdam.

piece 1: MOON　月

It's a performance in the total darkness. (Therefore no photos...) You would feel the existence of the dancer with smell, sound, and wiff. I have composed a scent of "white flower that blooms at night for attracting moths". The scent was impregnated on a special fan that was used by the dancer.

piece 2: Shiju hatte　四十八手

"Shijuhatte" is the Japanese version of "Kama Sutra". I've composed a scent of cherry blossoms. It was impregnated in the confetti and the dancer's kimono.

a Geisha was introducing my olfactory works in her radio program

It's almost a half year ago...

I was introduced in the radio program navigated by a geisha MAKOTO. She is a [real] Kyoto's geisha, or in other word geigi - meaning a professional Japanese dancer and entertainer, and also a jazz singer. She also came to the opening of my exhibition where I exhibited works themed upon geisha's and Dutch men of 400 years back in Japan. ... I was very impressed.

Just for her honor I'd like to mention that "geisha" does not necessary mean prostitute as one imagines in Western context. She's the geisha carrying responsibilities of inheriting the real Japanese tradition. She is sooooo beautiful!

オランダからお仕事で日本に来られている間にご出演頂きました～。

彼女との出会いは京都市若者会議U35と京都造形芸術大学での世界アーティストサミットのコラボで京都について話し合うという企画での出会いでした。

香りのアート？！っと、初めて出会うアートで興味津々な上にアックティブでさっぱりした上田麻希さんの魅力に引き込まれました。

それから、友人としても仲良くしてもらってます。

そんな、麻希さんは１０／２～２４まで大阪の阿波座にありますスペースアンフラマンスにて展覧会をされます。

“匂い” って、良い匂いまたはその逆いろんな角度から接してみるとあたりまえに匂うものが面白かったり、、という事に気づかされます。

１０／２からの展覧会はオランダの匂いや大阪の匂い、そして江戸時代の芸者さんが使っていた江戸時代コスメ？！などの展示をされています。

Event

街をあるいていて、どこからともなく漂う香りに、
思わずきょろきょろしてしまう。
なんて経験、誰にでもありますよね？
それは、おいしそうな香りであったり、
どこかの庭先に咲いているお花の香りだったり、
思わず「うっ」と顔をしかめてしまうような香りの場合も。

海外を旅行すると特に、街の香りを強く感じます。
空港に降り立って、まず、海外へ来たのだと実感させてくれるのが
香りかもしれません。
そんな街の香りを閉じ込めた「香水」をつくるワークショップがおこなわれると聞き、
これは気になる！と、OSOTOが取材させていただきました。

ワークショップは、
全面ガラスのエントランスから見る、
真っ白な室内が印象的な「space_inframince」で開かれました。

ここは、「肌からはじまる身体をとりまく環境」をコンセプトに、
基礎化粧品などのアイテムを扱うメーカー「inframince」の
オルタナティブスペース。
今回の企画は匂いと嗅覚のアーティスト上田麻希さんと、
inframinceとの出会いから生まれました。

上田さんは現在、オランダで活躍されています。
「香りのアート」というと、どうしても香水や香料など、
いわゆる「いい香り」を想像してしまいますね。
ところが、上田さんの作品はけっして「いい香り」だけではありません。
記憶や感情を想起させる「香り」が作品なのです。
今回も絵画を展示するように、「香り」が展示されていました。

さて、前置きが長くなりました。
今回のワークショップでは、
大阪の街を歩いていて気になった香りの元を持ってくる、
ということが事前に参加者に知らされていました。
どのようなものが集まったかというと･･･
・谷町のお寺の香り、ということでお線香
・青果市場の香り、ということでフルーツ
・長屋の香り、ということで梁から落ちてきた樹液（のようなもの？）
・道端の花の香り、ということでそのお花
・サクラの木の下の落葉の香り、ということでサクラの落葉
・靭公園の香り、ということで公園の落葉
・カフェの香り、ということでコーヒーと紅茶
大阪らしい街の香り、ということで、
串カツやイカ焼き、道頓堀の水なども集まりました。

さあ、香りというものはどのように作るものなのでしょう？
これは香りの元によっても異なるようです、
ほとんどの方が挑戦されたのが、ホワイトリカーを使うもの。
つくる過程はこんな感じ（画像をクリックすると拡大します）。

これぞ大阪、という香りはやはり串カツの香りでしょうか。
お腹が空いてしまいそうな香りです。
サクラの落葉の香りは、桜餅の香りに少し野性味を加えた感じ。
少し香りが弱いですが「はは～ん」と思わず、
うなずいてしまったのが古本屋さんの香りでした。

これらの香りは10/2（土）から、
space_inframinceで展示予定です。（※）
上田さんの作品である、オランダの街の香りも展示されているので、
比べてみてはどうでしょう？
香りで大阪toオランダの旅が楽しめますよ。

普段何気なく街を歩いていて感じているはずの、たくさんの香りたち。
香りもおそとの魅力の一部です。
私たちを取り巻く香りの扉を開いて、
日常生活に新たな視点をとりいれてみてはいかがでしょう？

Onder leiding van geurenkunstenares Maki Ueda kregen bewoners van Rotterdam-Hillesluis de kans om een eetbaar parfum te maken. Ongeveer veertig belangstellenden waren bij de workshop aanwezig.

Appels, sinaasappels, maar ook wortels en knoflook werden door de bezoekers platgestampt en fijngehakt om een eigen geur te maken, die vervolgens gegeten kon worden. De middag was onderdeel van een reeks workshops die laten zien hoe kunst de zintuigen kan prikkelen.

Is the bigger the better? No, the smaller can also be nice! --- That is the standing point of Palm Top Theater exhibition.

This exhibition only uses familiar electronics like iPods and iPads, and all are covered with accessories called i3DG. It lets you view 3D image, like a peepshow('kijkdoos' in Dutch). You feel immediately immersed here; definitely different type of immersion than watching it on a big screen in a cinema.

The questions we had at the starting point was: can this i3DG become a new platform for expression? What kind of new experiences can it offer to us? And, can it become a new medium?

[technique and development]

The technique used here is called Pepper's Ghost, which has been used in a classical theater world for showing a ghost on a stage. Jitsuro Mase, who has been teaching architecture at a technical college in Japan, applied this technique and developed his first prototype with a projector and a table in 2002. It was called "Table Theater". Later in 2008, he went smaller. Following an advise from his producer DIRECTIONS, Inc., he developed a prototype for an iPod and called it "i3DG", associating "i", "3D", and "Gadget".

[goal of the exhibition]

Using "smart" gadgets like iPhones and iPods as its platform provides us enormous possibility of what we can do with it. We can show animations and film clips, but we can also think of showing still images like photography and typography. Also one can think of an interactive app that uses sound as an input, or that deals with

sensors like gravity sensor and accelerometer. The goal of the exhibition was to challenge with the possibilities of i3DG in different aspects.

For the Palm Top Theater Exhibition that took place as a part of International Film Festival Rotterdam 2011, we developed more than 30 works from 28 international artists. They were displayed on i3DG's on 10 iPods, 5 iPads and a 32-inch TV.

[commissioned works]

5 works were developed by professional artists who got commissioned by us. We selected artists from the different fields: experimental & abstract film (Joost Rekveld), CG & animation (Arno Coenen), video &

media art (Geert Mul), net & software art (Lia), and illustration art (Lina Kusaite & Performing Pictures).

(1) Joost Rekveld: His work #43.2 is an abstract film whose model is a biological phenomena. Because of its details in the image that provides us a sensory texture, the image looks more like an object floating in the dark rather than an image, when it's displayed in the bigger screen. This is the reason why we have allocated the biggest

32inch-i3DG for his work, and tried to make its environment as dark as possible.

(2) Arno Coenen: He made a 3D video for a heavy-metal music. Like its music, the visual is punchy, and it never lets its audience walk away. He is a true craftman of the video: he uses the 3D layer effectively

and strategicly by letting a lot of things happening in the image, for example objects moving back and forth, left to right, trilling and rotating.

(3) Geert Mul: He layered the videos of the landscapes taken from the windows of the trains in different countries. As a result, you take a virtual train ride of the impossible world: there is a Japanese

building in a landscape of South Africa.

(4) Lia and (5) Lina Kusaite & Performing Pictures: descriptions are in the [interactive works]

We had 3 interactive apps developed for this exhibition. They are "iPhone/iPod apps" as artworks, made with a programming language, and in that perspective they are distinctive from rest of the works.

These works are playful and intuitive, and there is no beginning and end.

Because of the playful aspect, we hang them from the ceiling in the exhibition, so that they can move freely in the air. (Also this prevents the devices from falling.) Especially children were fond of these works and they played endlessly.

(1) Lia: Her work SUM05 exclusively uses a gravity sensor of iPod. In the image, grass grow endlessly and they form a small forest. Like the real grass that grow into the direction of the sun, this grass find their directions by the gravity sensor.

(2) Lina Kusaite & Performing Pictures: Based on the very fine illustration drawn with pencils by Lina, animating and programming was done by Performing Pictures. Blowing into the microphone makes the

little girl floating like a balloon, or moving closer to you. It became something between a poetic picture book and a playful music instrument.

(3) Emmanuel Flores El√≠as: "Disperse" is an interactive app that generates abstract image and sound by the movement of iPod. It's so intuitive and responsive that when you have it in your hand you know already how to play with it.

A lot of works in this exhibition were developed in the workshop we gave for the local students over 1 months of period. The purpose here was:

- to try out i3DG as a common platform for creation

- to give an educational meaning to this project

The criteria of selectiing the exhibiting works:

- Is the work intentionally challenges 3D

- Is it showing glimpse of the further possibilities of i3DG?

- Would the audience sit and watch through the work, or do they get bored in a half way?"

Guided by the skillful teachers, Kasper van der Horst and Denise Pakes, their works became highly experimental and challenging. Ludmila Rodrigues worked out with the principle of RGB in her piece "Disconexus", allocating each color to the each layer of mirrors. Together they form B&W image, but by adding delay to the each layer

she challenges audience to watch it actively. Amelia Kaczyska made in her piece "abusio" a small theater in i3DG. By scaling the figure of the dancers in different sizes, she made a stage that the sense of scale and depth is not coherent anymore.

[space design]

The design of the space of this exhibition

- provides audience a comfortable environment to watch through the pieces (not too long standing nor sitting)

- provides a cozy atmosphere that makes the audience feeling like being in a cafe or a lounge

- provides safety for the devices not to be stolen nor falling to the ground

- provides not too much yet enough lighting, so that the works look vivid

* 3 iPods (interactive works) are hang from the ceiling.

* 7 iPods (video works) are placed on the bar counters.

* 5 iPads are placed on the pedestals, at the height of the eyes.

* 1 32-inch-TV is placed on the specially designed pedestal, at the

height of the eyes.

Self-service coffee and tea was offered to the audience.

[audience's reaction]

Young and old, men and women, accountants and housewives: anyone was enthusiastic.

The average time that the audience spent in the exhibition room was about one hour. This means that they often watched all the clips through, without being bored of.

Audience showed the respect for the environment and devices. None of the devices were stolen nor broken.

- What is Sukebeningen Project?

Sukebeningen Project is a project to create multidimensional works of art based on characteristically Japanese eroticism. We explore the cultural differences in the conception of eroticism between the Netherlands and Japan from many different angles such as music, electronics. dance, fine arts, and olfactory art.

- The name "Sukebeningen"

The name of the project "Sukebeningen" comes from the beach Scheveningen in Den Haag, the Netherlands. Japanese pronounce the word "Scheveningen" /sukebeningen/. The word "sukebe" means somethig like "lecherous" or "naughty," and "ningen" means human being. So "Sukebeningen" means a naughty man. In Japan, therefore, Scheveningen is well-known as a beach with a funny-sounding name. One might say the name is ambiguous: for Dutch, it refers to the beautiful beach; for Japanese, it refers to a naught man. For both peoples, the name of the project is very familiar.

- Why eroticism?

One's conception of eroticism reveals his or her sexual sensitivity at　a very personal level. At the same time, eroticism reflects the taste of a people at the cultural level. Indeed, eroticism is an important aspect of the cultural aesthetics.

Everyone is interested in eroticism, and how different cultures conceive of it. But, it is also a sensitive topic, and it can be difficult to talk about it. We want people to enjoy our works personally and casually, although at the same time we deal with eroticism honestly and seriously.

ABOUT THE PIECES

The piece is based on Tanizaki's essay "Love and Lust." During the piece, the room will be completely dark. Please enjoy the piece using not only your eyes and ears but also your other senses.

Shijyuhatte is a Japanese kama sutra, originally it is a generic name of Sumo technique which decides the game. Derive from that, it has been used as a catalogue of the 48th postures of sex in Syunga since the Edo period. Each position has a poetic name. The names give us the impression of the rich imagination of the people in Edo period.

The choreograph is based on these 48 position of sex, and the music is based on the sound that actually existed in Yukaku (Japanese red light district) where Yujyo was. Moreover we put the element of Ozashiki-Asobi (game or play with Yujyo in Yukaku) such as Hauta "Ume ha saitaka" (song of Yujyo), Long pipe which is the symbol of Yujyo, song with game "Konpira-funefune." The reason is that there was a sophisticated culture that enjoy communication with Yujyo though the games and plays more than sex itself in Yukaku in Edo period.

The piece is based on the short novel "Shisei (the Tattooer)" written by Jun-ichiro Tanizaki. The premiere of the piece is 2010, in Den Haag Het Nutstheater. This is the revision of it. The novel "Shisei" includes some stimulative contents about expression of love such as a fetishism for leg, sadomasochism and so on. A lot of works of Tanizaki which have his peculiar view of the world were made into moves, and Shisei is also one of them. In this moment, we do not use "language" in the piece and try to express it more abstract way, music, dance, art, perfume.

The first scent:

Jinko, an aphrodisiac incense that used to be diffused permanently in the Japanese red light district in the old days. It symbolizes the ecstasy.

The second scent:

Shoko, an incense that is dedicated at the Buddhistic ceremonies and funerals. It symbolizes the death.

Sensory architect

Smell has powerful effects on our behaviour. Richard Mazuch is a director at Nightingale Associates, an architectural firm in London that specialises in this kind of thinking. When he designs hospitals and schools, he takes smell into consideration. He explains how scent can help speed up the healing and learning processes and why his colleagues should stop ignoring it.

Olfactory art historian

Smell has been indirectly used in art since time began. Caro Verbeek is an olfactory art historian or, as she likes to put it, an art historian of the other senses. Host Marnie Chesterton paid her a visit to find out exactly how much olfactory art history there is, and what it is that artists are trying to convey about the environment we live in when they use smell.

Maki Ueda is a visual artist who uses the medium of smell to intensify her work. One of the things she does is try to capture the smell of a place. Marnie went on an olfactory tour of Rotterdam, where Maki lives, and talked to her about what she does.

Julian Treasure, author of the book Sound Business and chairman of the UK-based consultancy Sound Agency talks to Marnie about how companies can save money and drastically increase staff productivity and profits from the sound they produce. The International Film Festival Rotterdam has brought cinema to the large screen. We think that the intimacy of small mobile screens are giving new impulses to the cinematic experience. V2_ will present a series of films and animations small enough to watch in the palm of your hand.

Acquaint yourself with a new 3D film experience on the iPhone or iPad at the Palm Top Theater exhibition. V2_ initiated a workshop for students and artists to generate new artworks for this intimate 3D environment. Experiments with space and interaction will form the heart of the exhibition.

Visitors will experience film and animation in a way that is strikingly similar to pre-cinema, when watching a moving image was an intimate and individual experience. At the same time, the Palm Top Theater will offer a glimpse of a cinema of the future in which the developments in mobile communication technology and the changing roles of users and producers will have a profound effect on the future of cinema.

AROMASCAPE OF SINGAPORE exhibition

Aromascape of Singapore consists of two parts: a workshop and an exhibition.

In May 2009 and March 2010, Ueda conducted a 3-day workshop for Aromascape of Rotterdam at Willem de Kooning Art Academy, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The workshop format will be adopted for the Singapore version of the project.

What do you smell if you walk around the city of Singapore? Savoury fragrance from food stands and restaurants, green and fresh scent in a market, salty sea bleezes, or stinking garbage? Singapore has an international reputation to be the clearnest city in the world. In this project, participants are going to explore Singapore on the level of smell.

What is it that we are smelling, what does it make you imagine, what does it make you feel? This workshop will deal with these questions through a combination of lectures, hands-on workshops with fieldwork. The result of the workshop will be used for the exhibition.

Some of the smells are extracted and exhibited. Just like a perfume shop, the visitors are free to touch them, open the bottles and smell them. They are not perfumes for wearing, but for evoking your emotion and imagination.

Relationship to Art and Education:
For Aromascape of Singapore, the relationship of the work to the theme can be seen as follows: the purpose of working with art academy sudents is to raise the awareness for their sense of smell. As these students will be in their late teens or early 20s, they have the maximum physical capability of smelling, because as you get old you can smell less. They still have the clear memories from their youth that are attached very much to smell. It's the perfect mement for them to learn about smell and totally different dimensions will open up in front of them.

This book is designed as a collection of the “toasts” and their
accompanying recipes from the Open Sauces dinner. It is a scrapbook – a
“common-place book” in the parlance of earlier centuries – and a book of
commons. Commons, a term denoting shared public resources, can be traced
back to the sharing of provisions, of rationing limited amounts of
foodstuffs to feed a whole community. Similarly, Open Sauces offers
bite-sized morsels of diverse aspects of contemporary food culture –
whether curious information, case studies, or specific techniques – to
feed a diverse group of readers.

The book also contains the recipes for the complete, seasonal Open
Sauces menu, designed for twenty-five people. The recipes list the
original amounts; however, as each course was quite small, the
quantities cited in the recipes could be used for four to six people if
served in a two or three course dinner. In several recipes the amounts
are approximate, as this is the preferred method of cooking and sharing
recipes at FoAM. The recipes and related texts are available online at
http://opensauces.cc in editable form. Improvements, adaptations,
comments, questions and suggestions are more then welcome. After all,
Open Sauces should stay true to its title.

Een stad laat zich lezen als een steeds veranderend boek, waarin gelaagdheid, meervoudigheid en dynamiek een hoofdrol spelen. Wij bezitten geen "Aleph" (Jorge Luis Borges) die ons het oneindige inzicht verschaft en in staat is een totaalbeeld te tonen van deze steeds veranderende stad. Wat wij wel kunnen is de oneindige hoeveelheid informatie filteren en ons beeld focussen op een deelaspect. Uit een oneindige hoeveelheid aan zenders weet onze radio juist die ene zender helder te ontvangen.

Gedurende DDW is LCM de plek van onderzoek en ontwerp van de “social urban space”. Dit gebeurt door middel van workshops van studenten van de TU/e faculteit bouwkunde en buitenlandse Erasmus studenten, werk van ontwerpers, designers en kunstenaars. Zij gaan de oneindige hoeveelheid informatie filteren en ons beeld van de stad focussen op een of meerdere deelaspecten.

Van 23 t/m 31 oktober kunstroutes, interventies, workshops, keynotes en lezingen tijdens de Dutch Design Week in La Citta Mobile, Vestdijk 133.
Een veelzijdig interactief programma over de urban design aspecten van een stad. Puls 2010 laat je actief deelgenoot worden van het onderzoek zelf: ontdek een kunstroute of interventie, bezoek lezingen of neem deel aan een workshop!

What do you smell if you walk around the City of Eindhoven? In this project you are going to explore Eindhoven on the level of smell.
What is it that we are smelling, what does it make you imagine, what does it make you feel? This course will deal with these questions .

The workshop will first focus on fieldwork and on observing the environment with the olfactory sense. You will smell a lot and learn how to communicate about smell with others, using a basic vocabulary for analyzing and expressing the character of a smell. We will map the smell and texts and create [AROMASCAPE OF Eindhoven]

Secondly we will extract smells from these smelly materials: cheese burgers, old books, rubber tyres, flowers, soup, etc. You will learn how to do this yourself (in the most simple way).

assignment:

(1) List at least 10 scents that you've smelled in the city. Note date & time and street name.

(2) From the listed scents above, bring at least 3 smelly materials to the workshop for extraction.
How much should you bring? For example,

- fallen leaves ---> 1 liter = medium size plastic bag/ziplock = equals to ''druk and sluit' 15cm x 18cm

Kodo literally means "way of the fragrance." Along with sado (tea ceremony) and kado or ikebana (flower arrangment), it is one of the three major classical arts that any woman of refinement was expected to learn. Kodo is perhaps the least well-known of the three, but these days its modern cousin, aromatherapy, is all the rage. When practicing kodo, a mica plate is placed on top of smouldering coals and the incense or fragrant wood is placed on the plate. So the wood is not actually burned, but gives off its fragrance in a subtle way.

It may seem to be all about the sense of smell, but the secret of kodo is in "listening." The participants don't "smell" (the Japanese verb 'kagu') the incense or fragrant wood, but rather "listen" (kiku) to it, opening up not so much their nasal passages as their heart and spirit. Modern western psychologists and therapists know about the power of the sense of smell, how a smell can instantly transport a person back to a place from their childhood. In Japan, the burning of incense and prizing of rare scented wood has been transporting people to a different spiritual plane for many centuries.

Fragrant wood is believed to have first been used in Buddhist rituals in the Nara Period (710-794). As such naturally scented wood is very rare and can take centuries to acquire its fragrance, man-made incense came into existance. As with the incense sometimes used in Christian churches, it was thought to have purifying properties. Even today it is used to purify the long wooden memorial tablets that are offered to the deceased as part of a funeral. Smouldering incense sticks (senko) are regularly placed on gravestones or the butsudan, small altars found in many Japanese homes. Kodo was formalized around the time of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa (1443-1490), who asked the scholar Sanjonishi Sanetaka to classify all of the incense that were in use at the time. For this reason, Sanjonishi is considered to be the "father" of kodo.

The fragrances of kodo are divided into rikkoku gomi (lit. six countries, five tastes). The rikkoku are six kinds of fragrant wood: kyara, rakoku, manaka, manaban, sumatora, and sasora. The gomi are the tastes of amai (sweet), nigai (bitter), karai (spicy hot), suppai (sour), shio karai (salty). Becoming able to break down a given fragrance into these different elements takes years of experience and a very refined sense of smell.

Since the Muromachi Period (1336-1573), kodo is said to have ten physical and psychological benefits or virtues:

Sharpens the senses
Purifies the mind and body
Removes mental or spiritual "pollutants" (kegare)
Promotes alertness
Heals feelings of loneliness
Creates a feeling of harmony even under stress
Even in abundance, is not overwhelming
Satisfies, even in small quantities
Does not decay even over centuries
Does no harm even if used every day

As in the tea ceremony, practitioners of kodo will gather in a room, in a private house or in a temple, with a floor covered with tatami mats. They sit in the formal seiza style (which soon becomes very uncomfortable for those not used to it) and take turns trying to guess the fragrance prepared by the komoto, or person who burns the incense. They hold the incense burner in one hand, cup the delicate smoke with the other and lift the fragrance to their face. The guessing process makes it seem like a game, though kodo practitioners tend to take this art very seriously and dedicate decades of their life to it. If you think you'd like to find out more about kodo, the best way is to contact a branch of one of the two schools, Oie-ryu and Shino-ryu.

It's a 3m diameter space created with a curtain. The walls are painted with smells.

OLFACTOSCAPE is a word that I made up with OLFACTO (=olfactory) and SCAPE (=scenery) .

Japanese people have unique sense for scents. Smelling as if viewing the landscape, they are appreciating the scents. They feel tipsy with the sweet scents under the cherry blossoms tree in the early spring night, and they feel the autumn for the scents of Osmanthus.

Let us observe such landscapes with our "nose". Close your eyes, and search in this 3m diameter cylinder for scents, like a dog. There would be a scent that is coming closer to you, and on a contrary, getting away from you. Is there a scent that attracts you, or that makes you getting closer to it? This is a research project of searching for the boundary and the possibilities of our sense of smell.

The selection of the scents is based on the dialogue I had with Inframince Co. The theme is "the ordinary scents around us, past + present + future"

In the workshop we have developed different extracts of the Osaka's most characteristic scents.
The smell map was also developed in a workshop.

* AROMASCAPE OF ROTTERDAM

It's coupled with "AROMASCAPE OF OSAKA". The extracts are developed by the students of Willem de Kooning Academy during the project-week workshop in May 2010.

* research project [Cosmetics of 400 years ago]

These cosmetics were originally developed for the exhibition "Holland Mania" held at De Lakenhal Leiden Stedelijk Museum in May 2009. These scents offer you the perspectives of the Dutch merchants who stationed in Japan's Desima-island for trading. They were the cosmetics that geisha's were wearing. They function as a medium for you to connect to the time and space.

Virtual Rose (Chicken Sous-vide)

ingredients for 1 person

chicken breast 180g
salt and pepper
black tea bag 1
white wine (chardonney) 80 ml
green asperges, 3 sticks, cut in 3 cm pieces
raspberry, pureed
blue cheese, cut in small pieces
basil (dried)

special materials:

ziplock, 1 bag
thermometer
timer

Salt and pepper the chicken breast and leave it for 30 minutes. Put in a Ziplock-bag the chicken breast, black tea bag, and asperges. Sous-vide (that means, cook the ziplock-bag in eau-bain-marie) for 20 minutes at the temperature 65 degrees.

In a meanwhile cook blue cheese and pureed raspberry in a small sauce pan on low heat. Keep stirring.

Garnish the chicken breast with the sauce and dried basil.

* This is a little chemistry. Referring on a chemical database (www.foodpairing.be) I've composed "the virtual rose flavour" without using rose.

* This recipe is completely Maki Ueda's original, specially developed for this event.

Last weekend was a premier of a performance piece that I collaborated with a group Scheveningen.

Its inspiration was Japanese fetiscism and eroticism that appear in a novel The Tatooer written by Tanizaki Junichiro. I contributed the olfactory part of this sensory performance.

beauty does not lie in the object per se; rather, in the nuances of the tapestry arisen from the interrelation among objects and shadows. a noctilucent jewel heighten luster in dark, contrary to degrading its charm in the daylight. no beauty exists without the function of shadows.

It's pity that I cannot show you smell in the photos.

A sound of friction. A sound of water echoing in a Suikin-kutu. Very tactile.

The performer is a dancer of NDT.

After this, the performer disappears and the scene changes, then she show the tattoo.

I've diffused two scents.

The first scent: Jinko, an incense that used to be used permanently in the red light districts in old days of Japan. It symbolizes love, desire, and eroticism.

The second scent: Shoko, an incense that is used in the Bhuddistic ceremonies and funerals. It symbolizes the death and purification.

Shoko is made of multiple fragrant wood, including Jinko. The more expensive the Shoko (the scent of death) is, the closer its scent becomes to Jinko (the scent of love). This shows a certain irony. I used these two scents to show such realism in old Japanese days and to make us possible to experience it by means of smell.

It was only a 20 minutes performance, but was very well received.

After the first two labs at Brunel University (May 2009) and Keio University (December 2009), the forthcoming workshop is the third cross-cultural UKIYO workshop in performance, design and network technologies features artists and researchers from the DAP-Lab and Japanese partners from Keio University and Maison d’Artaud (Tokyo). The project involves collaborative research experimentation conjoining artistic, technological and scientific disciplines. Based on a design libretto for the composition of a mixed reality installation – Ukiyo - Moveable World – the workshop develops performance concepts for linking physical performance spaces with virtual spaces/Second Life and a diverse range of innovative wearable design and programming, including:

– choreographies with interactional design, sounding bodies & audio processing
– design for wearable garments and audiophonics
– photographic/videographic image composition for interactional performance
– scenographic concepts for real time processes in networked virtual environments
(telematic and Second Life)
– avatar performance and animation
– programming of mixed reality environments
– analysis of sensory processing, polyphonics, and multimodal perception

The workshop takes place every day from 14:oo to 21:3o in Antonin Artaud Studio 101. Interested observers are welcome.

The UKIYO project will be concluded in June 2010 with the ensemble touring Slovenia, with public exhibitions of UKIYO 2 and a workshop held at KIBLA in Maribor.

・16:00 CBK staff carries 1 compressor and 2 tanks (270 liter x 2) to the starting point of the boat.

・Fulling of the air tanks. Somehow it didnt' want to fill more than 5 bar... but we managed to fill it up to 8 bar.

・ 17:00 Load in the tanks on board.

・17:30 Start. Spraying 18 scents over 45 min.

In the morning, I received 6 raw ingredients from Omega Ingredients. The top quality of flavour of the world! I've adjusted the strength of the scents.

And further I've done shopping for extracting some smell.

Speculaas spices: the must have spice mix for the Dutch.

I've tried to extract the smell of the sea with diverse sorts of sea weed from Japan. Somehow water-base didn't work so I've made alcohol-base extract.

Extracting BBQ chicken.

Extracting the smell of 'patat' - the french fries. It's also the must have smell for the Dutch.

Extracting pizza smell.

The left one is the extract from pizza, and the right one is the extract from BBQ chicken.

Selecting which liquor smell to use. (I'm not drinking...)

I decided to use Robijn for the smell of washed clothes.

I wanted to have the smell of Surinam's Toko in the line. So I've extracted from the smoked fish.
(in the end it turned to the smell of smoked salmon)

With watching the video documentation of the boat trip, I've made a 'smelly' scenario.
